Palace Casino in Edmonton can work there five years as a (card) dealer and still only make $9 an hour,' said United Food and Commercial Workers local 401 president Doug O'Halloran.
"Even with tips, said O'Halloran, the more than 200 employees are struggling to make ends meet at the casino, located in West Edmonton Mall.
"O'Halloran said the strike is set for Saturday morning.
"In a release, Gateway Casinos said 'it is unfortunate negotiations have broken down ... however, we will continue to work towards a settlement.'
"The company also said Gateway's employees are already the highest paid casino workers in the city, something O'Halloran conceded.
"Gateway said its offer would see market adjustments for some employees, and raises for each year of the proposed three-year contract.
"O'Halloran figured many employees may look for work at the River Cree casino at the Enoch Cree Nation, slated to open later this year."
The Palace Casino features 30 table games, a 24 hour Poker room, and a full service high limit lounge. There are 650 slot machines including the Blazing 7’s, The Diamond Dollars, and Monopoly. |
