Wheeling Racetrack May be First to Get Blackjack and Craps

CHARLESTON, West Virginia. – As reported by  the Associated Press and the Hangerstown Morning Heralds: "West
Wheeling Island slots may soon be joined by blackjack and craps.  Virginia isn't taking the competition from Pennsylvania slots parlors lying down.

"West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin signed a bill on Wednesday allowing each of his state's four racetrack counties to vote on whether to allow games like blackjack and roulette.

"The law goes into effect June 6, 90 days after passage.

"The West Virginia Family Foundation plans to sue over the legislation. The group said it violates the state constitution and would require a statewide referendum.

"Supporters said poker and other table games would create new jobs and help the tracks compete with gambling operations in other states, most notably Pennsylvania, which began allowing slot machines last year.

"Ohio County voters will be the first to decide whether to allow craps, roulette and blackjack tables at Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center.

"County commissioners unanimously approved a petition Tuesday from racetrack President and General Manager Robert Marshall asking the county to hold a special election June 9.

"If voters approve the request, Marshall said, Wheeling Island could begin offering table games as early as Nov. 1.

"Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort in Chester has indicated it plans to petition for a vote in Hancock County after June 9."
