Toughest Equine Sports: 2018 Grand National festival

trained Blaklion. The 9 year old put in an incredible performance in the 2017 running of the race kicking clear coming up to the 26th fence however he was possibly sent for home to early and struggled on the run in. He finished in fourth behind the likes of One for Arthur and Cause of Causes.

Blaklion then returned to the course at the start of this season in the Becher Chase and put in a stunning performance to win going away by 9 lengths from 2016 Grand National runner up, The Last Samuri. He again showed his jumping to be a key asset and always looked the winner throughout having been held up at the back of the field. Many punters will be looking for the best bets from Betfair for the Grand National as this horse is certainly to be one of them. Blaklion has struggled subsequently in the Grand National trial at Haydock but the ground was heavy and only three horses finished the contest so this race can be ignored.

If Blaklion can return to the form of his Becher Chase victory he has clear claims to improve upon his fourth finish from last season with Betfair putting him in at 12/1 to do so. A tilt at the Gold Cup looked likely with the open look to the race but he has been kept fresh having not ran which can only be another positive to his chances.

His trainer Nigel Twiston Davies has a good record in the race having been successful on two occasions. Firstly with the 7/1 favourite Earth Summit back in 1998. The horse had also won the Scottish and Welsh Grand National previously showing himself to be a star stayer. Nigel then followed up just four years later with the Jim Culloty ridden Bindaree in the 2002 edition of the race. The 8 year old was running off just 10 stone 4lb when victorious and then followed up in winning the 2003 Welsh National.
