New Hampshire Gambling Supporters Not Giving Up

Friday, June 19, 2009

CONCORD, New Hampshire -- As reported by the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune: "Legislators shot down proposals to legalize slot machines in the state, but supporters of bringing slots to RockinghamNew Hampshire

  Park still haven't given up.

"Sen. Lou D'Allesandro, D-Manchester, said he would continue to push his plan to authorize the state to distribute licenses to allow slots at each of the state's racetracks, and two more licenses for venues in the North Country, even though the proposal was rejected by the House on Wednesday.

"...Allowing slot machines in the state could be critical to the survival of Rockingham Park. Millennium Gaming, a casino operator, has promised a $450 million renovation to the Rock if slot legislation is approved.

"Budgetary alternatives to slot machines could include further cuts to state spending, an increase in the room and meals tax, a capital gains tax and an estate tax. Furloughs for state employees, expected to save millions of dollars, were approved last night.

"Numerous efforts by supporters of expanded gambling to bring slots to the Granite State have been voted down in both chambers this year..."
