NORTHFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio -- As reported by the News-Leader: "Ohio's horse racing authority is pushing state lawmakers to allow slot machines at Ohio's seven tracks, including Northfield Park,
without having to go to the ballot, where voters have shot down gambling numerous times in recent years.
"...In a March 19 'Proposal to Save Ohio's Horse Racing Industry,' the Ohio State Racing Commission suggested a plan to allow slot machines or video lottery terminals to be installed at the tracks. Unlike three previous attempts and a current proposal to bring casino gambling to the state, the commission stated, its proposal would only require approval by the Ohio General Assembly, not by a ballot initiative to change the state's constitution.
"...Commission member Tom Zaino, an attorney who drafted the proposal, said he believes the same part of the state's constitution that allows lotteries could also cover slot machines.
"Tom Aldrich, Northfield Park's chief operating officer, said the plan would be a shot in the arm to the racing industry..."
