ESPN to televise 2009 World Series of Poker

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

ANAHEIM, CA -- The 2009 World Series of Poker begins broadcasts on ESPN with Event #2 40th Annual No Limit Hold'Em on July 28th at 8:00 and 9:00 PM Eastern Time, helping the WSOP to celebrate
it's 40th year. With a $40,000 buy in per player, it brought in top professionals from around the planet. The WSOP began 40 years ago with 40 guys who got together and wanted to compete, just to see who was the best. Today the WSOP, which is now billed as the most prestigious poker tournament on earth, has awarded over $1 billion dollars in prize money to players. This has made it the richest competitive event anywhere. In comparison, the Kentucky Derby has paid its winners a total of approximately $16.7 million since 2001 - less than the nearly $17.5 million taken home by the 2007 and 2008 WSOP Main Event champions.

For this televised season, ESPN will only show three other event outside of the 40th Annual No Limit Hold'Em for a combined 31 hours of programming. These events are the WSOP Champions Invitational, Ante Up For Africa Celebrity - Charity Event and the Main Event. On Tuesdays until November 10th at 8:00 and 9:00 PM EST, back-to-back episodes featuring hot action and top names will be shown. Following the successful format of last year the Main Event was played at the RIO in Las Vegas down to the final table known as the November Nine, and ESPN will broadcast the final table on November 10 9:00 - 11:00 PM. A complete broadcast schedule can be found on the WSOP TV Schedule web page on the Just Gamble For Free website.
